Happy Valentine’s Day!

This time of year, you’ll often find me relaxing on a cold winter evening with Netflix, a steaming cup of peppermint tea, a tiny square of dark chocolate from Barcelona, and a small knitting project. Last year, I created a plethora of  baby alpaca infinity scarves. This year, it’s bunches of cashmere-merino fingerless gloves. I just love the soft texture, the rich hues, and the slightly animalic scent (sheep? lanolin?) of the yarns as they loop through my circular needles to create a woven fabric. My mind often wanders with the rhythmic click of the needles. I love to think about how the mitts will be sent out to warm the hands of my favorite people. I love the way the wool picks up the scent of my L’Occitane hand cream and how it lingers in the threads.

Quite a few fragrances were inspired by the delicate and sensuous qualities of cashmere yarn. Many use cashmere woods,  a blend of cedarwood, amber, musk and vanilla, to capture the feeling of being wrapped in a soft, cozy sweater.

Donna Karan Black Cashmere – Saffron, masala spices, white pepper, clove, nutmeg, pimento berries, broom flower, patchouli, rose, incense, wengue wood and bois de miel, labdanum

Illuminum Cashmere Musk - Coconut, fresh greens, purple hyacinth, amber and cashmere wood

Susanne Lang Cashmere – Amber, incense, saffron and spices

Hugo Boss Cashmere & Patchouli – Earthy, woody, & spicy notes, and patchouli

With the dusting of snow flurries yesterday afternoon, I’m still inspired by winter and all the season implies. So, in looking for some more seasonal sillage, I decided to research fragrances with frosty names that tell you exactly what they’re meant to smell like. Don’t you love when fragrance companies give you an image with the name? I do – and right now I’m looking for snow in a bottle!  Here are some choice candidates that I’d love to add to my fragrance armoire…

Floris Snow Rose – This hard-to-find, cult-favorite scent is inspired by a sunlit unfolding of warmly scented rose petals crystallized within a winter wonderland. Icy cool leafy green top notes give way to the vibrant floral heart of rose, geranium, and jasmine, which are ultimately warmed by soft sweet Oriental base notes of vanilla, musk, and sandalwood.

Nina Ricci Nina Snow Princess – A 2011 flanker to the original Nina fragrance, perfumer Olivier Cresp revisited his creation to give it a festive, seasonal, gourmand edge with notes of roasted praline, caramel apple, vanilla infusion, apple tree wood, cotton musk, Calabrian lemon, Caipirinha lime, and white cedar wood.

Demeter Snow – But of course… and probably one of the original snow-monikered fragrances on the market! Awarded two FiFi Awards in 2000, the Demeter folks said they wanted to capture the essence of snow in a scent – chilling, cool, clean and fresh, with a touch of dust (necessary to form flakes) and earth (upon which to rest).

MOR Snow Gardenia – What a perfectly lovely, descriptive name – I would buy this unsniffed! Notes are gardenia, juniper berry, ylang ylang, vanilla and sandalwood.

London City Winter Snow – A roll-on oil, a beautifully complex blend of new snow, spearmint, menthol, iced lemon, and woodland moss.

Black Baccara Snow Angel – Inspired by visions of sparkling freshly fallen snow – clean, soft and icy, and with a vague hint of the ghost of autumn leaves. Notes are cranberry, pine needles, neroli, cedar and peppermint.

Victorinox Snow Power – A limited edition creation meant to emulate the feel of freezing white snow, with a lead note of vetiver. Creatively packaged with an attached caribiner that you can attach to your climbing harness as you scale snowy peaks.

Victorinox Snow Flower – The feminine offering of the limited edition – notes are floral  accord mixed with vetiver, orris root and cedarwood.

Bogner Snow – Who better than the famed ski gear company to make a scent called snow?? Created in 2000 and geared towards men, this aromatic fougere blend was designed to be pure and light like snow, and transport the wearer into a world of infinite whiteness. Notes are tangerine, juniper, pepper, ginger, cedar, fig leaves, oakmoss, galbanum, and amber.
