ScentWorld, Bali, and a Giveaway!

We had a fantastic time at last week’s ScentWorld 2013 at the Downtown Marriott in NYC. Views of the Freedom Tower were right outside the entrance, and the world’s premier scent and sensory marketing conference was just inside on the third floor! Ambient scenting is a growing market, with many booths displaying their unique scent delivery systems. Though most consumers aren’t fully aware of the trend, many resorts, casinos, spas, and health care and retail establishments use scent to enhance the aesthetic experience.

Much research has been done in the field scent marketing, and ScentWorld was chock full of seminars led by leading scientists and academics. Some highlights were Dr. Alan Hirsch, founder and neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, delivering the keynote address, “Research into Action: From Science to Market Implementation.”  Scent researcher, Dr. Maureen Morrin presented “Moving Consumer Perceptions and Behavior Through Scent-Triggered Memory: The Latest Research.Chandler Burr, director and curator, Center of Olfactory Art, Museum of Arts & Design, was the keynote speaker at the Gala Cocktail party. Sniffapalooza’s own Karen Dubin participated in the panel discussion, “Smelling, Feeling, Wanting, Learning: A Scent Lover’s Workshop.”

Perfumers Christoph Hornetz (above with Karen D) and Gary McNatton stopped by the Sniffapalooza booth to chat. On display at our table, and provided by our friends at Histoires de Parfums, was the complete Scent of Departure fragrance collection in its jaunty travel case. The perfumes, each representing a airport destination included Paris, London, Munich, Tokyo, and of course, New York City, attracted much attention and lots of visitors stopped by for a sniff!

Best of all, we saved a bottle of Bali just for you! Enter to win this tropical vacation in a bottle with its notes of bright citrus, delicate white florals, creamy vanilla, and blonde woods. Just leave a comment below and tell us your favorite winter vacation spot. One lucky winner, chosen at random, will receive their very own 50 ml bottle of Bali. Good luck!

Waking up on the edge of the Bali Sea at Lotus Bungalo outside Candidasa on the south coast of lovely Bali was one of the most gorgeous moments of my life (and the perfect antidote to an endless gray Michigan winter).

Strangely enough, it’s Bali! We live half the year in Singapore, so Bali is always just a short flight away. I’m going next month. To me Bali is about the tuberose (or malam malam). I would be curious to see the Scent of Departure take on Bali.

Oh WoW! I’ve heard great things about the Scent of Departure series. I used to buy perfume whenever I went on a vacation, and I imagine that getting one of these to correspond with a trip would be taking that idea to the next level. Are they sold only in niche boutiques or also in airports?
